Is Your Clutch Slipping? Here's How to Tell if Your Clutch May Be Wearing Out

Your clutch is one of the hardest-working components in your vehicle. Every time you change gear, pull away from a junction, or stop in traffic, your clutch is doing its job. Like any mechanical part, it will eventually wear out. Recognising the early warning signs of a worn or slipping clutch can help you avoid more expensive repairs and prevent being left stranded.

One of the most common signs of a slipping clutch is when the engine revs increase, but your vehicle doesn't accelerate as it should. You may notice this most when driving uphill, overtaking, or accelerating onto a dual carriageway. If the engine sounds like it's working harder than normal but the car isn't picking up speed, your clutch could be slipping.

Another sign is difficulty changing gears. If selecting gears feels stiff, crunchy, or the gear lever refuses to engage smoothly, it could indicate clutch wear or a fault within the clutch system.

You may also notice the clutch biting point has changed. If you have to lift the clutch pedal much higher than usual before the car begins to move, it's often a sign that the clutch friction plate is becoming worn.

A burning smell, especially after reversing, towing, or driving in slow-moving traffic, can also indicate excessive clutch wear. This smell is caused by the friction material overheating and should never be ignored.

Other symptoms include:

✔ Juddering or vibration when pulling away

✔ A spongy or unusually stiff clutch pedal

✔ Poor acceleration despite high engine revs

✔ Difficulty selecting reverse or first gear

Driving with a slipping clutch won't usually improve on its own. In fact, continued use can cause further damage to the clutch assembly, flywheel, and other transmission components, resulting in a more expensive repair.

At R & J Car Services, our experienced technicians can quickly diagnose whether your clutch is at fault and advise on the most cost-effective solution. Whether it's a worn clutch, hydraulic issue, or another transmission problem, we'll get to the root of the issue and have you safely back on the road.

If you've noticed any of these warning signs, don't wait until your vehicle leaves you stranded.
