🔧 Wetbelt Failure at Just 34,000 Miles – Why Correct Servicing Is So Important!

You might expect an engine with just 34,000 miles on the clock to have plenty of life left in it. Unfortunately, that's not always the case, particularly with certain engines fitted with a wet timing belt (Wetbelt).

We've recently had a vehicle into R & J Car Services fitted with a PSA engine, and despite covering just 34,000 miles, its Wetbelt is already showing signs of failure!

What Is a Wetbelt?

Unlike a traditional timing belt, which runs outside the engine oil system, a Wetbelt operates inside the engine and is continuously exposed to engine oil.

While this design has certain advantages, it makes using the correct manufacturer-approved engine oil and following the recommended servicing schedule absolutely essential.

Incorrect oil, poor servicing or extended oil change intervals can contribute to premature belt deterioration.

Why Is Wetbelt Failure So Serious?

As a Wetbelt deteriorates, small particles of rubber and belt material can break away and circulate through the engine's lubrication system.

These particles can accumulate in the oil pump pickup strainer and other oil passages, restricting oil flow and potentially causing serious engine damage.

On turbocharged engines, this is particularly concerning because the turbocharger relies on a consistent supply of clean engine oil for lubrication.

It's Not Just About Replacing the Belt!

One important detail that's sometimes overlooked during Wetbelt replacement is the small filter within the oil supply system.

On this particular turbocharged PSA engine, it's extremely important to inspect and clean the relevant oil pump filtration components, oil feed lines and filters.

At R & J Car Services, we don't believe in cutting corners.

When carrying out this repair, we take the time to inspect and clean the necessary oil passages and filtration components, rather than simply replacing the Wetbelt and hoping for the best.

Prevention Is Better Than an Expensive Repair

This vehicle is a perfect example of why mileage alone doesn't tell the whole story.

Regular servicing, correct oil specifications and identifying early signs of Wetbelt deterioration can make a significant difference to your engine's reliability.

If you own a Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall or another vehicle fitted with a Wetbelt engine, it's worth checking whether your vehicle is affected and ensuring it's maintained correctly.
