Your tyres play a crucial role in keeping you safe on the road, yet they’re often overlooked until a problem occurs. At R & J Car Services, we regularly see tyres that are well past their best putting drivers at risk and increasing the chance of MOT failure.

So, how do you know when it’s time to replace your tyres? Here are the key signs every driver should be aware of.
1. Low Tread Depth
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm, but safety performance drops well before this. For better grip, especially in wet conditions, we recommend replacing tyres once they reach around 3mm. A quick 20p coin test can help you check at home.
2. Uneven or Excessive Wear
If your tyres are wearing unevenly, it could indicate issues with wheel alignment, suspension, or tyre pressure. Replacing the tyre without fixing the underlying issue can lead to repeated problems.
3. Cracks, Bulges or Damage
Visible cracks in the sidewall, bulges, or cuts are a clear sign your tyre needs replacing immediately. These can lead to sudden blowouts, especially at higher speeds.
4. Age of the Tyre
Even if tread looks acceptable, tyres generally should be replaced after 5–6 years, as rubber degrades over time.
If you’re unsure about your tyres, our team at R & J Car Services Felixstowe is happy to carry out a free tyre inspection and offer honest advice.
